There are hundreds of well-known core and abdominal exercises and thousands more if you really go digging for them. This often leads to some confusion about the best way to train the abs in a wholistic and functional manner, especially if you’re also looking for aesthetic improvement.
In this video we go over what are the basic requirements for a functional, well shaped and aesthetic core and then give the mover’s odyssey opinion of what the best single workout to hit these requirements is. This exercise (the ab rollout and its variations) is a classic ab exercise that is easy to learn, cheap to perform (you only need an ab wheel or suspension trainer like gymnastic rings) and if performed and progressed properly, can reap rewards for a lifetime. This exercise can target not only the upper and lower abdominals, but also the obliques, the serratus anterior and the transverse abdominis (the only muscle that can truly shrink the waist line ).
